Remembering Joseph Newell
MSU remembers Joseph N. Newell, accomplished English graduate student and aspiring educator
Mississippi State University’s College of Arts and Sciences and Department of English mourns the passing of Joseph N. Newell, a gifted scholar, writer and teacher whose passion for literature and storytelling touched those around him. Newell, who earned both his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in English from MSU, passed away this month at the age of 24. He was preparing to begin Ph.D. studies in English at Vanderbilt University this fall.
A native of Cary, Miss., Joseph was known for his intellect and deep love for the written word. As an undergraduate and graduate student at MSU, he exemplified academic excellence and leadership, serving as a composition lecturer in the Department of English, a graduate representative on the College of Arts and Sciences Dean’s Advisory Board and vice president of Sigma Tau Delta English honor society. He also was a member of Phi Beta Kappa and Phi Kappa Phi honor societies and served as an intern in the College of Arts and Sciences’ Dean’s Office for one summer.
Joseph’s scholarly voice was already gaining recognition. He received the 2023 MSU Gender Studies Essay Award for his article, “Endearment and Infantilization in A Room with a View,” which was later published in the South Atlantic Review. His research explored the ways literature can shape and reflect human experience.
“English asked me to think, and I revel in unlocking challenging puzzles and the riddles that present themselves in various forms and conventions,” Joseph said in a 2023 interview. He described himself as an “overthinker” who found a welcome home in the field of English, where reflection and curiosity were not only encouraged but essential.
Joseph often spoke of the formative power of stories—both those we read and those we live. “We are who we are because we have a story,” he said. “We are a product of our narrative, and English invites us to confront and reflect on perceptions, ideas and experiences that are unique to us and give an account of the events that led us to who we are today.”
His aspiration was to teach literature at the collegiate level, using the classroom as a place to help others discover the transformative power of language. “The art of writing is truly remarkable,” he said. “Its potential to sway opinions, alter attitudes and shape beliefs is unparalleled.”
Joseph’s warmth and insight left a lasting impression on his professors, peers and students. He will be remembered not only for his academic achievements but for the compassion and depth he brought to every conversation, classroom and page.
Mississippi State University is proud to have been part of Joseph Newell’s journey. His life was filled with meaning, purpose and a commitment to intellectual and personal growth. He will be deeply missed.
