This course will examine the literary tradition of the American South dating from the 19th century to the present. We will analyze authors and texts representative of the "southern tradition," placing particular emphasis on southern gothic and pastoral modes of writing. We will also examine how the social construction of race has shaped the tradition of southern writing.
