Kudos for our Students
- Senior Dennis Hoyle and MA students Lauren Shook, Courtney Kimbrough, and Tyler Trimm won the Howell H. Gwin Memorial Scholarship.
- Shenetra Cooper won the William H. Magruder Scholarship.
- MA students Misty Smith and James Maroney won the Eugene Butler Creative Writing Award.
- Elizabeth Teeple received the Peyton Ward Williams Distinguished Writing Award. Joshua Parsons received Honorable Mention.
- Leslie Adams and Nick White received the new Al Camus Award in Creative Writing.
- Josiah Meintz won the Linda Brasher/Mary Ann Dazey Award for the best essay written in Advanced Composition
- Molly Hartzog and Caitlin Wolfe won the Lewis and Betty Noland Book Award.
- The following students received awards at the Southern Literary Festival: Jason Roberts, second place for his poem “Apropos of Hell”; Jessica Balle, third place, for her poem “Ten Years Without You.”
- Andy Black, BA, received his MA in Medieval Studies at the University of Memphis. He has also begun PhD studies at the University of Maryland.
- Laurie Buchholz, MA, serves as Director of the Study Skills Center at Monterey Peninsula College.
- Tiffany Love Curtis, MA, has begun the PhD program in English at the University of Southern Mississippi.
- Misty Hickson, MA, and Wesley Venus, MA, received PhDs in English from the University of Georgia.
- Michael Shelton, MA, teaches English at Hebron Christian School. He also serves as president of the Mississippi Poetry Society.
- Josh Thompson, MA, presented his paper “’Poet, here’s a work beseeming thee’: The Narrator’s Perceptions of Love and Poetry in Christopher Marlowe’s Ovid’s Elegies” at the South-Central Renaissance Conference in Kansas City.
- Our Xi Kappa chapter of the English honorary society, Sigma Tau Delta, has inducted nine new members. Led by president Abigail Voller and by advisor Dr. Michael Kardos, STD has recently judged the annual poetry-writing contest at Starkville High School; they also plan to gather supplies for a women’s safe house in Columbus.
